You know I hate to do this. But I think that the clan idea or house faction idea, is like the worst idea ever.
I hated the guilds in UO. I hate the clans on nearly EVERY single multiplayer fps out there. Clans are a place where people go to join so they can attach themselves to a name.
Just a name. If you really want to argue all that shit about team bonding and always having friends to play with and all that weak shit the clan fans try to spout, then you are making excuses for a simple and base idea. Superiority through superior numbers. Thats what clans are about. Just like uo guilds and clans in all online games. You ask to be on someones team so that you are not the only guy with out a team logo (GoD) (LOKI) (CA) (AOD). It makes you feel superior to anyone you see who does not have one of those things. It also gives groups of people the feeling that dominating one server or game is OK just because they fly the clan banner all the time. Clans seriously hamper the enjoyment of nearly all online games , and at risk of offending, Clans are basicly there for 2 groups. Assholes and Pussies. There were some clans in UO that were based on business models more than ego models so I concede it is possible to run clans that are not completely useless. I just see the majority rule of clans as more base instinct rather than in depth character playing.

I agree with yer point there, and with alot of games it's not neccessary at all. However, in an rpg style game (UO, AC) it's neccessary to show some sort of companionship that's supported in the game engine. Hell, Bellicose is a game based on teamwork, so some sort of in-game support is needed.

Sadly though, it's become a requisite for a game nowadays to support/allow clans when they're not even part of the game. I chalk it up to kiddies that refuse to believe that they're playing different games. For example, guilds formed in Diablo and Quake, and then those players moved on to Ultima Online, resulting in the PK Guilds. To the kiddies, they're playing the same game.

More than just amazing, it's really depressing. When you break things down, people are under this veil of anonymity (sp?) when they're on the Internet, completely free to behave in any way they want. The fact that given the freedom many people choose to be abusive and disruptive really says alot for this species.

However, it may be something more of the subspecies. Namely, the majority of people surfing the web and playing the games are essentially white males. What would the internet be like if it were dominated by women, or blacks, or asians (leave your racist jokes at the door to this thread, please).

Kinda makes you wish you could withdraw your membership to the species.
